I love to look at self-portraits--NOT selfies--, and Picasso has some wonderful ones, I especially like this one, (on the left) from 1907, when he was young, only 25. I love the expressively intense eyes and the planes of the face. The one on the right is from 1938, more than 25 years later.
He said of his work in general (but it can certainly be applied to his self portraits)
“The different styles I have been using in my art must not be seen as an evolution, or as steps towards an unknown ideal of painting…Different themes inevitably require different methods of expression. This does not imply either evolution or progress; it is a matter of following the idea one wants to express and the way in which one wants to express it.”
